'Good Women & Bad Girls:' Historian to share history April

Last year, historian Kathy Wilson gave us a look at the changing role of American women from colonial times through the Victorian era, including what it meant to be a “straight-laced, uptight, or loose” woman. She returns April 9 to the Ray House with another program in her engaging series on 19th-century women’s history; however, this time the focus is on marriage, family, and health—including sex!       (Admit it, you’re curious).

Kiwanis continues Easter Egg Hunt tradition, but in new location

For more than a half century, the Vinton Kiwanis Club has been starting the Easter Egg Hunt at 10 a.m. on a Saturday before Easter. This year, the tradition continues, but in a new location: Kiwanis Park. There will be, as in years past, separate areas for the different age groups.  "We have moved the Easter egg hunt from its usual location of Riverside park to Kiwanis park at the corner of 13th Street and Hwy 218," said Club President Dan LaGrange.

PEO HG to meet March 28

P.E.O. Chapter HG will meet Monday night, March 28th at the home of Kathy Van Steenhuyse at 7:30 P.M..   Her address is 1502 A. Avenue--right next to the Middle School. You can park in front of the school and come right up to the the front door.

Vinton Art Guild of Fine Arts plans studio party

The Vinton Guild of Fine Arts is having a New Studio Party! This will be the April Fun Meeting, held at our new Old School Studio on Tuesday,  April 5th, at 6:00 p.m. Come check out the new space and help us decorate! We will be painting, so wear old clothes and bring brushes, rollers, and drop clothes if you have them. Bring a friend! Non-members may attend for $5.

Area churches announce Holy Week service schedules

Vinton Area Ministerial Association Holy Week services begin next Monday, March 21. Schedule: Monday, March 21: First Christian Church. Tuesday, March 22: Wesley United Methodist. Wednesday, March 23: St. Mary's Catholic Church. Thursday, March 24: Harvest Christian Fellowship. These services take place at 7 a.

Brandon 1st Responders plan grilled pork loin dinner, April 9

The Brandon First Responders will be holding a grilled pork loin supper on Saturday, April 9, 2016 from 4-7:30 p.m. at the Brandon Ara Community Center. Cost will be as follows. Adults, $8.00 and Children 5-12 years old $6.00 Proceeds from this event will go toward emergency equipment and training.

Aqua Aerobics: VPRD sessions to begin March 30

The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department is currently accepting registrations for an upcoming Spring session of Aqua Aerobics. This class will be held Wednesday and Sunday evenings at the Iowa Braille School’s indoor pool. Wednesday class times are from 6:30-7:30 PM on March 30, April 6, 13 and 20. Sunday class times are from 5:30-6:30 PM on April 3, 10, 17 and 24.

Bluebird house class set for tonight

We still have space available for our bluebird house class. Join our naturalists in making your own Eastern Bluebird house and decorating it by wood-burning on the outside. There is a $15 fee for this program.  Pyography kits may be purchased for an additional fee - No need to register just show up. The class begins tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Nature Center.

Vinton Library, Historical Society to host 'Bus-eum' April 5

The Bus-eum will come to Vinton April 5. On Tuesday, April 5, Michael Luick-Thrams and Irving Kellman will be here with their 44 foot Bus-eum. There are photographs, interactive displays, and video all dealing with  “ At Home in the Heartland – how Iowans got to be us.”  Irving pretty much stays inside the bus, but Michael will be available to chat and share stories with anyone.
